Let's meet the drugs!
Antibiotics are designed to target unique bacterial components, but remain relatively inert against eukaryotic cells. There are five basic sites of action for the antibiotics that are commercially available today. These include the bacterial cell wall, the cell membrane, protein synthesis, nucleic acid synthesis, and folic acid metabolism. The section contains a brief summary for each antibiotic class. As well, this section contains an Embedded Document that lists the common spectrum of activity for commonly used antibiotics.
